Keep your head up!
Video duration is 4 minutes and 38 seconds.
There are two indulgences that are too costly for any leader to afford. By indulgence I simply mean, something that would be easy to give into in the moment; something offering short-term reward that would hurt us in the long run.
The two indulgences I want to talk about are discouragement and disappointment. It’s tempting at times to fall into each of them. Let’s think for a moment what each of these two words means. First let’s look at the prefix of each word. “Dis” is to negate something; to undo its power.
So let’s look at the word “discourage.” What are we doing when we give into discouragement? We are allowing our courage to be taken away. We are allowing a circumstance or person to rob us of our courage. Though it’s tempting to blame the circumstance or person, each of us is responsible for choosing what we yield to or stand up to in life.
Now let’s look at the indulgence of disappointment. Something is appointed for us…the next level of growth, a new relationship or opportunity…something we are meant to connect with that is missed. Appointments get broken when we yield to disappointment.
Discouragement drains us of courage. Our hearts become afraid. Our minds begin to rehearse all the “What If’s.” We change our course of action and miss an appointment.
Think about the words, “discouragement” and “disappointment.” They may be tempting in the moment. We’ve all probably battled with each of them, but the cost of each of them is just too high. They can throw us into a downward spiral from which it’s difficult to recover. Each of us is responsible to watch over our hearts and minds.
I want to encourage and strengthen you today to meet your next appointment. Keep your head up! Drive away discouragement and disappointment. Let today be a day of growth, regardless of your circumstances. Good things await you!
