Step out of your comfort zone
“And Peter answered Him and said, ‘Lord if it is you, command me to come to You on the water.’ So He said, ‘Come.’ And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when He saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’ And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, ‘Oh you of little faith, why did you doubt?’ And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those who were in the boat came and worshipped Him saying, ‘Truly You are the Son of God,’” Matthew 14:28-33.
Dear water walker,
Many people fault Peter because of his "sinking experience." Though Peter was rebuked for His little faith, I believe that the Lord was proud of Him for getting out of the boat. Did you notice that eleven others failed to move out of their comfort zones at all? Peter had done something that no one on earth but Jesus had done! His only fault was that in the middle of it all, He transferred His focus from the Lord to the storm around him.
It took great faith and courage for Peter to step outside the boat that had offered him so much in the past. He had made his living from this boat (or one similar to it). He had spent many a night there. He had piloted it through the waters, controlling its course. Now Peter is confronted with a storm so large that it takes that control out of his hands. He answers the Lord's call to step out of its limited safety. By doing this, Peter was transferring his faith from the boat into the invisible safety of the Lord's command.
Though Peter eventually sank, I cannot help believing his faith was propelled by this act of courage. This combination victory/failure stretched and taught him so that the next time he could take even greater steps.
We will never grow in the Lord unless we have the courage to get out of our own boats. This does not mean acting on impulse or foolish presumption. But when God has confirmed His word to you, you need to bypass your intellect and your common sense, and place yourself into the hands of the Almighty God. This is the place where true life and ministry happen. Selah!
